Learn Spring Vocabulary: Spring has sprung!

Spring is finally here and it’s time we learned some spring vocabulary and expressions!

It’s important to know how to speak about recent or current events or moments in time. So when spring finally arrives, we need to know how to talk about it!

It may sound pointless, but trust me, when we know how to speak about recent moments, we give our English an amazing boost!

 

Spring-related expressions and sayings

Let’s start off with different expressions and comments we can make that are related to the change of season:

 

  • Spring cleaning

This is a time that a lot of people decide to clean their house and organize their clothes and belongings, ready for the new season. This is to spring clean

 

  • Spring fever

We say that someone has spring fever when they are excited about the change in season. When you are energetic and pumped as a result of the changing weather and the feeling of new beginnings, we can say you have spring fever

 

  • Spring break

Spring break is a short spring holiday mainly in America. During this short holiday, students have parties and fun events with their friends, this ‘celebration’ is called spring break

 

  • Spring has sprung

We say this to mean that spring has arrived, and we can tell by the change in weather and the presence of blooming flowers and nature

 

Weather-related expressions and phrases

When spring arrives, it is very common for English speakers to comment on the improved weather, here are some things we can say:

 

  • The weather is warm

This means that it’s not quite hot, but it’s no longer cold like in Winter

 

  • The weather is pleasant

This is another way of saying that the weather is nice.

 

As we said before, it is very common to talk about good weather, so here are some ways to mention the nice weather thanks to the change of season:

  • It’s a lovely (Spring) day
  • What great (Spring) weather!
  • You can tell Spring is finally here

 

Spring vocabulary

 

Related to weather:

  • Shower: This is when it rains lightly and for short periods of time
  • Drizzle: Drizzle is also a kind of rain, normally light rain in fine drops
  • Puddle: A body of water that collects on a surface after it has rained

 

Related to nature:

  • Blossom: This can be both a verb and a noun. As a noun, blossom refers to the small flowers that we see on trees and plants during the Spring. The verb to bloom refers to these flowers appearing. 
  • Nest: Where birds lay their eggs up in the trees.
  • Bee: An insect that pollinates flowers in the Spring
  • Bunny: A child-like term to refer to a rabbit. 

 

Dates and celebrations:

  • Easter: Easter is a Christian holiday that celebrates the belief in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. … Although a holiday of high religious significance in the Christian faith, many traditions associated with Easter date back to pre-Christian, pagan times.
  • Holiday: This can refer to any time during the year that we don’t have to work or study and we normally celebrate in some way

 

Adjectives:

  • Fresh: This adjective can refer to both the weather, meaning cool but not cold. And the idea of a new or ‘fresh’ start, referring to new beginnings 
  • Hopeful: Feeling or inspiring optimism about a future event.
  • Positive: Meaning constructive, optimistic, or confident.

 

And there we have it! Some common useful vocabulary that you can now use to boost your English this Spring!
